UFC Stockholm Fight Night Preview

Gustafsson vs Smith Poster

“I can’t be bothered watching UFC tonight, it’s on too late”. Find yourself using this as an excuse all too often? This will especially be the case if you are a European fight fan. You can save that lame excuse for another time as UFC Stockholm will start at a reasonable time for once. You’re looking around mid afternoon if you live in Europe.

This is very much a showcase of the finest European talent MMA has to offer. I’d be ashamed if you weren’t interested by the end of this article!

Main event analysis

Alexander lost to Jon Jones in December, while Anthony lost to Jones in March. It’s a weird position to be in when the GOAT has beaten you. Many question the motivation for fighters here in the main event.

But MMA is very unpredictable. With a guy like Jon Jones, he could drive a car off a bridge tomorrow, or test positive and get banned for life. He’s also entertaining a switch to Heavyweight.

It’s reasons like this why both Alex and Anthony need to keep plodding along and this is the perfect fight for them.

Prediction: This will be Anthony Smith’s eighth fight in the last two and half years. Having been beaten to a pulp by Jon Jones in March, you can argue that the odds are against him. It seems a little too much too soon.

Gustafsson’s boxing is so technical and his footwork is great too. Anthony just doesn’t seem as slick and if a healthy, on form Gustafsson turns up on Saturday, we strongly feel Gus will get the knockout.

Others to keep an eye on

The German Nick Hein fights on the Preliminary card this Saturday. He’s one to watch no matter who else is on the card with him. Makwan Amirkhani vs Chris Fishgold on the main card could steal the show with fight of the night. The UFC loves Amirkhani and having watched him fight live, I totally get why!

Jimi Manuwa has built himself a reputation of either knocking someone out or getting knocked out. His opponent Aleksandar Rakic is widely discussed as a top young prospect across MMA pundits. Bearing this in mind, we could have an early fireworks display on our hands!

Where can I watch this card?

You can catch UFC Stockholm in the UK live on BT Sport. In the US, ESPN+ will be your home for this event. For any other country, please check your local listings.
