The episode gets off to a fun start. Stipe walks into Team Cormier’s locker room armed with enlarged photos of himself with a creepy moustache, and one large landscape photo of him and Gian Villante with their junk blurred out. Stipe claimed they didn’t actually have their junk out and that they just used an app to blur out their crotches.
Cormier and his team arrive and everyone is in hysterics at the banter. We have our first prank of the season!
We then move onto a Team Cormier where Thailand Clark is frusrated by Cormier’s training tactics and feels like the coach is constantly criticising him. The two get into a heated debate about this. Luckily, the people person that is Daniel Cormier, found a way to break the ice and started rolling with Thailand. By the end of it they were both laughing with each other and gained mutual respect.
The focus then shifts to Team Cormier fighter Brad Katona who trains out of Conor McGregor’s gym in Ireland called SGB. Brad explains that it wasn’t Conor who brought him to the gym but his coach John Kavanagh.
After a brief focus on Brad the episode shifts to take a closer look at Team Miocic’s Kyler Phillips. Kyler explains that he’s trained in martial arts all his life and that he currently trains out of the MMA Lab. The MMA Lab is home to numerous MMA fighters including Benson Henderson and Alex Caceres.
Kyler goes onto explain how he’s fighting for a better future for him and his girlfriend.
We then begin to see a showcase of Brad Katona’s amateur fights. Brad gives off quite a geeky persona and explains how having a degree and being academic helps him analyse and breakdown fights. Brad and Daniel start training together in the TUF Gym with Daniel explaining how easy it is to train Brad.
Both men weigh in and make the 145 pound featherweight limit. Both fighters make for an intense stare down, with Daniel comparing Katona to Clark Kent. Going into the fight this time it seems really hard to call whose going to come out on top.
The fight starts out very fast paced for Kyler taking Brad down and seemingly takes control of the fight early on. However, Brad is back up on his feet very quickly and starts tagging Kyler with low kicks and punches. Katona gets the better of Phillips for the remainder of the round and ends up scoring a take down towards the end.
Going into round two Brad seems like the more loose and relaxed fighter. He’s found his distance and timing. Kyler does get in some significant strikes but the fight seems to be going Brad’s way, with Brad getting the better of the grappling exchanges.
The fight ends up going the distance. Two judges scored it 20-18 to Brad Katona. One judge scored it 19-19 so Brad won by majority decision. The key to victory for Brad was absolutely his low kicks. After the fight Stipe complained that Kyler didn’t follow the game plan. Kyler seemed to take the loss well.
After the fight we then shift to the next fight annoucement. This time Cormier gets to pick the fight and chooses lightweight Luis Pena to take on Team Miocic’s Jose Martinez Jr.
